What is the registration number (Stammnummer)?

The registration number – called Stammnummer in German and numéro matricule in French – is field 18 of the Swiss vehicle registration document (the grey permis de circulation). It is written in the format XXX.XXX.XXX and uniquely identifies the vehicle itself, not the holder or the plate.

Because it is tied to the vehicle, the registration number stays the same across licence plate changes and ownership changes throughout the vehicle's entire life. SwissCarInfo looks it up against official vehicle-registry data: a real-time query for IVI vehicles, with an automatic fallback to our local database otherwise.

How to find your registration number

You will find it in field 18 of your grey Swiss vehicle registration document (permis de circulation). It is a nine-digit number shown as XXX.XXX.XXX — simply type it into the search box above.

The licence plate (e.g. ZH 123456) is assigned by the canton and can change — for example when you move to another canton or transfer it to another vehicle. The registration number (field 18, XXX.XXX.XXX) belongs to the vehicle itself and stays the same for the entire life of the vehicle, regardless of plate or owner changes.

You get the official identification of the vehicle: type approval, vehicle category, first registration, displacement, power, fuel type and a partial chassis number. From there you can open the full sheet (IVI sheet, type approval or local sheet, depending on the source) for all the detailed technical data.
