What is the Cantonal Statistics tool?

The Cantonal Statistics tool on SwissCarInfo is an interactive map of Switzerland that lets you explore the vehicle fleet by canton. It is the most comprehensive tool in Switzerland for analysing the distribution of vehicles across the country.

Based on official data from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO/ASTRA), it covers all vehicles registered in Switzerland -- passenger cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles, trailers and more.

Vehicle fleet

View the total number of registered vehicles per canton. A time slider lets you go back in time (2010-2026) and observe the evolution year by year. Press the play button to automatically animate the map and see the evolution in real time.

Available metrics: absolute number, per 1,000 inhabitants, density per km2.

New registrations

View new registrations by canton and year. Identify market trends: which cantons register the most? How are electric vehicles progressing in new sales?

Electric vehicles (EV)

A dedicated tab for fleet electrification. Compare the share of 100% electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) between cantons. A summary shows the national EV total, market share and the leading canton.

Advanced analysis

Access rankings (top 10 cantons by criterion) and trend charts with evolution curves over several years. Select the metric to analyse: number of vehicles, EV share, vehicles per inhabitant, etc.

The 8 combinable filters

The tool offers 8 filters that you can freely combine to refine your analysis:

Brand

Filter by manufacturer: BMW, VW, Tesla, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, etc. Over 400 brands available.

Fuel

Petrol, diesel, electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), hybrid, gas (CNG/LPG), hydrogen.

Body type

Saloon, SUV/off-road, estate, coupe, convertible, MPV, commercial vehicle, pick-up, etc.

Drivetrain

Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive (4x4/AWD).

Vehicle type

Passenger car (PW), motorcycle, truck (light/heavy), trailer, agricultural vehicle, etc.

Holder's country

Filter by the address country of the vehicle holder (not nationality). The vast majority are in Switzerland (CH), but you can also identify vehicles whose holder is domiciled in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, etc.

Gearbox

Manual or automatic gearbox (including CVT and dual-clutch).

Euro standard

Euro 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 6d. Useful for analysing fleet age and environmental impact per canton.

Interactive map and table

Map view -- An interactive SVG map of Switzerland with a colour legend (colour gradient proportional to values). Hover over a canton for a quick preview. Click to open the full details in a modal window with all statistics.

Table view -- All data in a sortable table by column. Click on any header to sort in ascending or descending order. Ideal for precisely comparing figures between cantons.

Comparison mode

Enable comparison mode to display two maps side by side with independent filters. Example uses:

Data export (CSV & PDF)

Max and Enterprise subscribers can export filtered data as CSV and PDF from all statistics pages.

CSV export -- Download data in spreadsheet format (compatible with Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice). Includes all cantons with selected metrics. Available on the cantonal map, EV municipality map, market shares and rental fleet pages.

PDF export -- Generate a professional PDF report with SwissCarInfo header, formatted tables and logo. Includes filtered data with print-optimised layout for sharing.

Free access allows you to view all data online. Only CSV and PDF export is reserved for Max and Enterprise subscribers.

Data source and reliability

The data comes directly from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO/ASTRA) via the computerised vehicle registration system (IVZ). These are the same data published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

SwissCarInfo aggregates and structures this raw data for interactive real-time analysis, without modifying the official figures.

Update frequency

Data is updated according to the FEDRO publication schedule:

New registrations Monthly Published the month following the reference period.
Historical data Archive Biannual snapshots available since 2010, enabling trend analysis over 15+ years.
