What is field 24?

Field 24 of the Swiss vehicle registration document contains the type approval number (also called approval number or Typengenehmigung).

This number is assigned by FEDRO (Federal Roads Office) and uniquely identifies the approved technical characteristics of a vehicle type in Switzerland. It is the official reference for accessing all technical data of a vehicle.

Field 24 formats

The content of field 24 can vary depending on the vehicle's type of approval:

Standard Swiss approval

Examples:

  • 1TD812
  • 1FA502
  • AXA158

Combination of letters and numbers (e.g.: 1XX000 or XXX000). This is the most common format for vehicles directly approved in Switzerland.

  • X
    Search by VIN (field 23)

Special cases (IVI, IVIX, X)

Some vehicles do not have a standard type approval in field 24. Here is how to handle them:

The mention IVI in field 24 indicates that the vehicle was individually imported and registered based on a European certificate of conformity (CoC) or an electronic data sheet, without a traditional Swiss type approval.

IVIX has the same meaning, but the "X" indicates that the importer has refused publication of certain data for data protection reasons.

How to search: Use the registration number from field 18 of the vehicle registration document. This number is in the format XXX.XXX.XXX (9 digits, soon 12 with an additional .XXX).

Note: These vehicles are direct imports (new or used), registered via the eCOC system rather than through a traditional Swiss type approval.

An "X" in field 24 means the vehicle was individually imported without a recognised Swiss or European type approval. These vehicles were individually approved by a cantonal road traffic authority.

How to search: Use the VIN (chassis number) from field 23, or search by brand and model.

Note: These vehicles are often parallel imports, vintage vehicles or rare models not officially approved in Switzerland.

How to search for these vehicles?

  • IVI / IVIX -- Search by registration number (field 18), format XXX.XXX.XXX
  • X -- Search by VIN (field 23) or by brand and model
